Springtail Facts - Most species have a springlike structure that allows them to jump - hence their common name.
- Springtails are world wide with over 675 species occurring in the U.S. and Canada.
- Springtails inhabit only moist or damp areas because they can quickly lose water through their cuticle.
- Most species can be found in soil, but can also be found in leaf litter, mulch, under debris and firewood on the ground, landscape timbers, etc.
- Most Springtails eat decaying matter, but a few eat living plant tissue, and some of these species can be a pest!
- They often invade structures in search of moisture when their habitat becomes dry, such as bathrooms, kitchens, damp crawlspaces, basements and wall voids.
- They can enter through door tresholds, window screens, around utility pipes, etc.
- Springtails are the size of a sesame seed or smaller.
