Termite Facts - We all know that termites are destructive timber pest that can damage your home - but did you know that termites play an important ecological role? They provide nest holes for birds, lizards, and other animals, they assist in the breakdown of organic matter - returning nutrients to soil and they assist with soil aeration!
- The two most common termites found in our service area are subterranean termites and dry wood termites.
Subterranean Termites - Subterranean Termites are social insects that live in colonies.
- They are blind and communicate through pheromones.
- Although they nest in soil, they can build mud tubs several feet above the ground that connect their nest to wood in structures.
- Mud tubes are built to cross areas of adverse conditions.
- They can also nest in wood that is often wet.
- They often enter a structure through expansion joints in concrete slabs or where utilities enter the house.
- They can easily attack any wood in contact with the ground.
- They may be detected by the presence of termite swarmers, mud tubs & wood damage (if seen).
- Wood damage often goes undetected because the exterior surface usually must be removed to see the damage (damage can be detected by tapping the wood every few inches with a handle of a screwdriver. Damaged wood sounds hollow and the handle may even break through the surface!)
- Termite swarmers can be distinguished from flying ants by their thick waist, straight antennae and wings of equal size. (flying ants have a pinched waist, bent antennae and 2 different size wings).
- These termites have 3 castes - workers, soliders and reproductives (king and queen).
- Soilders defend the colony against other insects - like ants.
- When the queen is mature, she will produce anywhere from 5,000-10,000 eggs per year and may live for many years!
- It takes several years before the colony reaches its typical size of 60,000 or more workers!
- Termite preventative treatments are available!
